At some point almost everyone who has served or is serving in the Armed Forces wonders whether their efforts are understood or appreciated by the general public. Attending the Deland Veterans' Day parade ought to dispel any such doubts.

The Navy League and the local units it supports were well represented; the Council had a float and four convertibles with Council officers, WW II veterans, and two of the Navy recruiters riding in them. Marching with us were the Sea Cadets carrying our banner and theirs and performing a short drill routine for the crowd. Just behind us were the always impressive ERAU NROTC color guard and drill team, and farther up the line Station Ponce had a 23 foot small boat.

Along the entire parade route the sidewalks were crowded with people cheering, applauding, and waving small American flags. Some even ran into the street to thank us for our service. It was altogether a very moving experience. It's gratifying to know that no matter what the mood in Washington or Hollywood, in small town America patriotism is alive and thriving.

Bravo Zulu to Walt Thrush, Ed d'Hondt, the two Bobs, LeBlanc and Traetta, and Ray Huther who constructed the float and puled the whole thing together.
